The Maryborough & District Triathlon Club Inc. conducted its final race of the 2009/10 Summer Championship Series on Sunday in warm and humid conditions for triathlon.

Due to the large number of events being conducted in Maryborough on Sunday, and the increased traffic on the roads as a consequence, the ride section of the race was reduced to a one 11.5km lap of the cycle course for all competitors.

In the Open Male Long Course little separated Adam Lowery and Martin Mark as they exited the 400m swim course to collect their bikes for the cycle course, and in fact both triathletes were in transition at the same time.  John Chandler was not far behind however, and well within striking distance as the race unfolded.

Adam Lowery however proved to be the strongest of the three triathletes on the bike and opened up a substantial lead coming back into transition (T2) for the run leg.  Martin Mark was able to hold second position at this stage, but John Chandler had made up valuable ground coming into the last leg of the event.

Adam Lowery was able to hold on to win Race 6 in the fastest time of the day, the very impressive time of 42:09.  Martin Mark was also able to hold off a fast finishing John Chandler to record the strong time of 43:49 and take second place, and John Chandler, who improved as the race went on finished third in time of 43:58.

In the Open Female Long Course it was Jo Butler, who produced a fantastic race, with a very strong cycle leg, to take first place in a time of 44:46.

Mike Egan also had a great race, excelling in all aspects of the event to post the second fastest time of the day and take out the 50+ Male Long Course in a time of 42:28.  Jenny Barras, who has displayed fantastic form since the 2010 Vision Super Central Goldfields Reverse Triathlon, also excelled in the day to take out the 50+ Female Long Course in a time of 51:24.

In the Open Male Short Course it was a two way battle between two young Maryborough triathletes in Clancy Long and Evan Ipsen.  Clancy was able to gain a slight lead in the cycle leg, and although Evan made a strong surge at Clancy with approximately 500m to the finish line in the run leg, Clancy kicked again to win the event in the impressive time of 31:27.  Evan also produced the top time of 32:18.

In the Open Team Short Course it was the “Taylor Team” who reigned supreme, posting the great time of 39:31 to take first position.  The “Taylor Team” is a new family to the Maryborough & District Triathlon Club and has already displayed great form in the sport.

The Maryborough & District Triathlon Club Inc. will be conducting it 2009/10 Summer Championship Presentation Dinner at Peppa’s Restaurant on Friday 19th March 2010.  All current, past, and prospective members and their families are invited to attend the “club’s” Inaugural Presentation Dinner.  Anyone interested in attending the evening is asked to make bookings through Club Assistant Secretary, Jenny Barras on phone (03) 54613155.

The “club’s next event will be the first event in the 2010 Winter Championship Series, and this will be a triathlon from the Maryborough Sports & Fitness Centre on Sunday 18th April 2010.

The Maryborough & District Triathlon Club conducted Race 5 of its 2009/10 Summer Series on Wednesday 24th February 2010 from the Maryborough Outdoor Pool, its inaugural Twilight Triathlon, and the event was hailed an outstanding success.

The event was a reverse triathlon involving a 2km run, 6km ride, and a 200m swim.  Nearly thirty (30) triathletes participated in the event, which created some exceptional times and competition amongst the group.

In the Open Male Category the times were very close between the top four triathletes with less than a minute separating this group throughout the race.  It was however top cyclist and young gun triathlete Clancy Long who finished in first place in an outstanding time of 18:06.  In second place was Marong triathlete Ashley Robertson (18:22), Ned Volk in third place (18:42), and Adam Lowery (19:03) in fourth place.

In the Open Female Category it was Jo Butler who produced an exceptional race to finish in first place in the very strong time of 20:54.  Georgia Reid also produced a very strong performance to finish in second place in a time of 24:56, and Jacki Dellavedova (26:46) had a great race to take third place.

In the U16 Male Category Ty Stewart continued his great form from the 2010 Vision Super Central Goldfields Reverse Triathlon to take first place in the great time of 19:26.  Riley Herd was not far behind Ty however and finished in second place in a time of 20:24, and in third place was up-and-coming triathlete Gerard Fitzgibbon in the strong time of 21:40.

Caitlin Butler enjoyed the course as well, and after registering the very strong time of 23:21, finished in first place in the U16 Female Category.  Little separated the Leech sisters, Romani and Jsanna, throughout the entire race, but it was Romani who produced the slightly stronger performance on the day to take second place (24:35) from Jsanna (24:56) in great performances from both young triathletes.

In the 50+ Male Category it was Mike Egan who posted a blistering time of 19:05 to take first place, and Jenny Barras also excelled in all aspects of the event to win the 50+ Female Category in the very strong time of 21:50.

In the Team Category little separated the Park and Taylor teams throughout the entire race but it was the Park Team who produced the slightly stronger performance on the day to register the winning time of 21:10 with the Taylor Team in second place in a time of 21:46.

The final race of the 2009/10 Maryborough & District Triathlon Club Inc. Summer Championship Series will be held on Sunday 7th March 2010 from the Maryborough Outdoor Pool with registrations at 9am, event start time 9.30am.  The event will be a traditional triathlon with short and long courses, and a team category to cater for all levels of triathlete.  All current members and individuals interested trying the sport of triathlon are invited to come along and enjoy the final triathlon for the 2009/2010 season.

The 2010 Vision Super Central Goldfields Reverse Triathlon attracted its highest profile field of Elite Triathletes on Sunday at the Maryborough Outdoor Pool. A bumper field of 125 triathletes completed the Princes Park course in excellent competition conditions, which made for some exceptional times being posted. In the Open Men’s Long Course the competition was enthralling right from the first lap of the 1.3km run course. A group of five triathletes jostled for position throughout the run, with positions changing frequently throughout the 3.9km run. It was however World Champion Duathlete Leon Griffin who led the field into transition for the first time with the 2009 Australian Junior Male Triathlete of the Year Jamie Huggett, Australian Triathlete Gareth Halverson, and three time event winner and 2009 Course Record Holder David Meade in close pursuit. Little separated this group of triathletes throughout the ride section of the race as well, but it was Griffin and Meade who made a small break between themselves and the chasing group to enter transition in a winning position. Griffin however proved to the stronger of the triathletes in the water on the day posting the incredible winning time of 53:14, a new course record. David Meade finished in second position just 30 seconds behind Griffin in a time of 53:34, with Jamie Huggett in third place in a time of 54:33 In the Open Female Long Course it was a two way battle between defending Champion Triathlete Elkie Belcher and four time Australian Duathlon Champion Nadelle Legge. In the run leg it was Elkie Belcher who made the early break to take the lead with Nadelle in hot pursuit. Nadelle however entered transition in first position, and the battle continued in the ride leg. Nadelle was able to hold her advantage in the ride leg but Elkie was still within striking distance depending on the swim leg. Although Elkie made up considerable time in the swim leg, Nadelle was able to hang on to her lead and take first position in a new course record time of 64:28. Elkie finished in second place in the very strong time of 65:59. Other local triathletes to perform well included Tara Fitzgibbon (1st 20-29 Female Long Course – 72:55), Carol Sing (1st 40-49 Female Long Course – 74:13), Ann Sing (2nd 50-59 Female Long Course – 80:05), Jennifer Cullum (3rd 50-59 Female Long Course – 89:56), Tyson Macilwain (2nd 20-29 Male Long Course – 65:32), Geoff Macilwain (3rd 40-49 Male Long Course – 65:03), Peter Neville (2nd 50-59 Male Long Course – 71:30), and Gerald Salmon (2nd 60+ Male Long Course – 76:40). In the Short Course it was Ashley Robertson who registered the quickest time to take first position in the Open Men’s Category (32:44), and Michelle Scott won the Open Female Category in an impressive time of 35:27. Other local triathletes to perform well in the Short Course included Genna Fitzgibbon (1st 15-16 Female – 40:43), Romani Leech (2nd 15-16 Female – 48:38), Ty Stewart (1st 15-16 Male – 33:36), and Zac Egan (2nd 15-16 Male – 34:47). In the teams category local teams to perform well included Paul Volk Team (1st Male Long Course – 61:04), Ned Volk Team (2nd Male Long Course – 62:58), Stewart Team (3rd Male Long Course – 64:42), Dellie Team (1st Mixed Long Course – 64:22), Butler Trio Team (2nd Mixed Long Course – 73:43), Best Three Team (3rd Mixed Long Course – 73:57), CGCS Engineering Services (1st Short Course – 35:37), and Team Changas (2nd Short Course – 35:53).

A small field of riders participated in the 40km Blue Pyrenees Bike Ride from Maryborough to the winery.

In idyllic conditions the riders averaged 30km/hr to complete the ride in a time of 1:19hrs.

The cyclists traveled in a tight bunch for the majority of the ride before Peter Neville made a break away approximately 4km from the Blue Pyrenees Winery. Both Gerald Salmon and Gary Saunders responded immediately to this surge in an attempt to chase Peter down. Although Peter had gained a 50m lead on the chase group, it was Gerald Salmon who was able to make up this ground before the finish to take line honours on the day. Peter held off the fast finishing Gary Saunders however to take second place, with the remainder of the riding group finishing only a couple of minutes behind.

The Maryborough & District Triathlon Club Inc. would once again like to thank the Blue Pyrenees Winery for their support of the “club”.

The “club’s” next event will be a triathlon at the Maryborough Sports & Fitness Centre on Sunday 8th November 2009 at 9.30am (Registration). All current and prospective members are encouraged to come along and participate or just spectate.

Maryborough & District Triathlon Club held its Annual Long Course Reverse Triathlon on Sunday, although the weather was cool and the entry numbers were down it was still a keenly contested event through the different categories.

The younger triathletes showed exceptional form against some older competitors, such as Ben Huggett, Elkie Belcher, Evan Ipson and Zoe Osborn.  Peter Neville showed that he has maintained his good form.

With the longer reverse course competitors had to run 4kms, ride 20kms, and then finish with a 400m swim, although competitors raced all against one another there were winners in their own categories.

In the Open Male category the winner in record time was young Ben Huggett from Ballarat in the time of 53min 51sec with his farther Dave Huggett 2nd with a time of 56min 39sec.

The Open Female category went to Elkie Belcher in a fast time of 1h 00mins 18sec which was a record, winning from Carol Sing who also showed improvement 1h 12min even.

Evan Ipson won theU16 Mens event in the record time of 1h 09min 40sec showing a vast improvement.

The U16 Womens event was also won in a record time of 1h 00min 43sec by Zoe Osborn from the Ballarat Triathlon Club.

The 50+ male event was again won by Peter Neville who improved his time winning in 1h 05min 41sec beating his previous record by 3minutes.

Three of these competitors Elkie Belcher and Ben Huggett in the junior categories and Dave Huggett in the open event are now preparing for the World Triathlon Championships to be held in Queensland in September and the Maryborough & District club wishes them the very best.

Our next event to be held on September 13th will be the annual Kids Triathlon event to be held at the Maryborough Sports & Fitness Centre – YMCA.

After a cold, wet, and windy Saturday, triathletes enjoyed some pleasant conditions for Race 2 in the Maryborough & District Triathlon Club’s Winter Series on Sunday at the Maryborough Sports & Fitness Centre.

A large field of novice and experienced triathletes contested this event, and some very competitive times were registered by many of the triathletes.

The event was a reverse triathlon, and as such the field commenced together in one wave on the run leg.  In the Long Course Category the early pace on the run was set by Elkie Belcher and Evan Ipsen, with Clancy Long and Martin Mark following closely behind.  As the run leg unfolded both Elkie and Evan extended their lead but a chase group of runners including Mark, Peter Neville, Daryl Stewart, and Geoff MacIlwain emerged, with Clancy Long still within striking distance.

Betina Jensen, in her first ever triathlon, also displayed exceptional running form, and recorded a strong time on the run leg to set herself up for a great first up performance in this event.

The first six triathletes in the Long Course Category were all in fact in transition together, but some exceptional transition form from several of the triathletes saw a distinct advantage gained in the first transition (T1), and as such the group had spread right out by the time the cyclists had entered Majorca Road on the out and back 8km cycle course.

Positions in the event changed constantly throughout the remainder of the cycle and swim course, and in the end it was Elkie Belcher who posted the fastest time overall to win the Open Female Category in a time of 31:06.  Elkie is continually improving her technique and triathlon form in the lead up to the World Triathlon Championships on the Gold Coast in October, and the club wishes her every success in her endeavors.

In second place in the Open Female Category it was Betina Jensen, who in her first ever triathlon also displayed strong cycling and swimming form to register the very respectable time of 44:40.

In the Open Male Category it was young Clancy Long, who is renowned for his strong riding form, who pulled away from the rest of the field to record his maiden Maryborough & District Triathlon Club Reverse Triathlon victory in a time of 31:32.  In second place was Geoff MacIlwain who also displayed strong form in all three legs of the event to record the very competitive time of 32:29, and Daryl Stewart, who continues to improve with each event, finished in third place in a time of 33:09.

The Ipsen & Volk Team (Awesome 4some – Take 2) also produced a very strong performance to record a winning time for the Long Course Team Category of 33:14.

In the 50+ Male Long Course Category it was Peter Neville, who continues to maintain his strong form and competitive times, who recorded the winning time of 33:37, which was just outside his own record set at the June 2009 event.

In the U16 Male Short Course Category, there were two new competitors in the sport of triathlon contesting this category, Harrison and Ben Butler.  Both boys displayed good form in all aspects of the event with Ben being the eventual winner in a time of 22:41, and his brother Harrison also enjoying the event and posting a great time of 28:05.  Both boys have several years of participation left in this category and as such these times were both exceptional.

The U16 Female Short Course Category was also contested by three triathletes who have several years left in this category, with two of them participating in their first ever triathlon.  All three triathletes showed triathlon form above their years, and completed the course in great times.  In first place was Caitlin Butler in a time of 21:18 (which was only 4sec outside the record she set at the June 2009 event), in second place it was young Tori Chandler in a time of 25:10, and in third place was Lauren Butler in a time of 28:36.  The Maryborough & District Triathlon Club looks forward to all three girls enjoying the sport and participating in future club events.

In the Open Male and Female Short Course categories it was John Chandler who made it back to back victories in the male section in a time of 25:13, and newcomer to the sport, Raelene Edwards also enjoyed a top race to record the strong time of 26:00

The Open Team Short Course Category was hotly contested by two new teams to the sport of triathlon as well, with the Evans/Wagstaff/Evans team the eventual winner in a time of 21:00, and the Evans/Ellis/Chandler team in second place in a time of 25:19.

The 50+ Male Short Course Category was won by another newcomer to the sport as well.  Barry Parsons in his first ever triathlon as an individual enjoyed all aspects of the reverse triathlon format to post the very respectable time of 22:42.

Race 3 of the Maryborough & District Triathlon Club’s Winter Series will be the Long Course Reverse Triathlon involving a 4km run, 20km cycle, and 400m swim. This event will be held from the Maryborough Sports & Fitness Centre with registration at 9.30am and competition commencing at 10.00am.  All current and prospective members are encouraged to come along to participate, marshal, or just spectate and get a feel for the sport of triathlon.

The Maryborough & District Triathlon Club Inc. conducted its first event of the 2009 Winter Triathlon Series, a “Reverse Triathlon”, on Sunday in very pleasant competition conditions with a strong field turning out to contest the event.

The event was conducted from the Maryborough Sports & Fitness Centre, with the “run” being staged on the Jack Pascoe Reserve Athletics Track, the “ride” out and back on the Majorca Road course, and the “swim” in the heated pool facilities.

All athletes started the event together in one wave in the run section, and the early pace was set by “Ipsen Team” who were competing in their very first triathlon.  Several of the experienced triathletes were not far behind however so the stage was set for some very exciting competition.

In fact there were some exceptional times set at the event with three records being broken, two of these in the Short Course.

The “Ipsen Team” went on to post the impressive time of 19:57 breaking the previous record of 20:46 set by the “Grose Team” for the Short Course Team category in June 2005.

Young gun triathlete Caitlin Butler also had an exceptional race showing good form in all aspects of the event to post a new course record in the U16 Female Short Course in the time of 21:14.  This effort broke the two year course record of 21:53 set by Tiarni Harrison back in May 2007.

 Caitlin in transition

The under 16 male short Course was contested by two newcomers to “reverse triathlon” competition, Jack Chandler and Evan Ipsen.  Both boys had great first up races, and also produced very strong times as well.  Jack Chandler, in his first ever triathlon of any description performed very well in all aspects of the event to post a great time of 25:07.  First across the line in this category however was Ivan Ipsen in a time of 19:05, just 44 seconds outside the U16 Male Short Course record set by Jeremy Dellavedova set back in June 2008.

The Open Male Short Course was won by John Chandler in a time of 25:12.  John showed great support to his son Jack in his first ever triathlon event, and the “club” looks forward to both triathletes competing again in the July event.

Competition was also very strong in the Long Course category of the event, with yet another record time being posted.

The 50+ Male Long Course record, which was set by Peter Neville in July 2008, was once again broken by Peter in the impressive time of 32:40.  Peter had an exceptional race, with his cycling form and swimming improvements enabling him to slash over a minute off his previous record time of 33:56.  Such was Peter’s performance he set the fastest time on the day.

Brian “The Fish” Park also performed very well in aspects of the event in the 50+ Male Long Course category, making up considerable time in the pool to post the very competitive time of 36:30 to take out second place.

The Open Male Long Course category was also very hotly contested, with all competitors excelling in the ideal competition conditions.  It was however Daryl Stewart who reigned supreme on the day in a time of 33:21 to win.  Daryl was followed closely by Adam Lowery in a time of 34:51, then came Barry Smith (35:30), and Shane Dellavedova (37:24).

The Open Female Long Course category was won by Jackie Dellavedova in a time of 42:50.  Jackie continues to grow in confidence with each event she competes in, and as such continues to improve her times accordingly.

The next club event will Race 2 of the 2009 MDTC Winter Triathlon Series, and this will be conducted from the Maryborough Sports & Fitness Centre on Sunday 12th July 2009.  All current and prospective members are encouraged to come along and participate or just gain some insight into the sport of triathlon.
