A small field of riders participated in the 40km Blue Pyrenees Bike Ride from Maryborough to the winery.

In idyllic conditions the riders averaged 30km/hr to complete the ride in a time of 1:19hrs.

The cyclists traveled in a tight bunch for the majority of the ride before Peter Neville made a break away approximately 4km from the Blue Pyrenees Winery. Both Gerald Salmon and Gary Saunders responded immediately to this surge in an attempt to chase Peter down. Although Peter had gained a 50m lead on the chase group, it was Gerald Salmon who was able to make up this ground before the finish to take line honours on the day. Peter held off the fast finishing Gary Saunders however to take second place, with the remainder of the riding group finishing only a couple of minutes behind.

The Maryborough & District Triathlon Club Inc. would once again like to thank the Blue Pyrenees Winery for their support of the “club”.

The “club’s” next event will be a triathlon at the Maryborough Sports & Fitness Centre on Sunday 8th November 2009 at 9.30am (Registration). All current and prospective members are encouraged to come along and participate or just spectate.

For further details please contact Martin Mark on ph: 54641443 or Jo Butler on ph: 54612975.

The Maryborough & District Triathlon Club Inc. would like to thank their apparel sponsors, Parkview Bakery, Sludgebusters, and Fitter Faster for their support of the club, and Mike Egan SportsPower for providing the retail outlet for sale

After a cold, wet, and windy Saturday, triathletes enjoyed some pleasant conditions for Race 2 in the Maryborough & District Triathlon Club’s Winter Series on Sunday at the Maryborough Sports & Fitness Centre.

A large field of novice and experienced triathletes contested this event, and some very competitive times were registered by many of the triathletes.

The event was a reverse triathlon, and as such the field commenced together in one wave on the run leg. In the Long Course Category the early pace on the run was set by Elkie Belcher and Evan Ipsen, with Clancy Long and Martin Mark following closely behind. As the run leg unfolded both Elkie and Evan extended their lead but a chase group of runners including Mark, Peter Neville, Daryl Stewart, and Geoff MacIlwain emerged, with Clancy Long still within striking distance.

Betina Jensen, in her first ever triathlon, also displayed exceptional running form, and recorded a strong time on the run leg to set herself up for a great first up performance in this event.

The first six triathletes in the Long Course Category were all in fact in transition together, but some exceptional transition form from several of the triathletes saw a distinct advantage gained in the first transition (T1), and as such the group had spread right out by the time the cyclists had entered Majorca Road on the out and back 8km cycle course.

Positions in the event changed constantly throughout the remainder of the cycle and swim course, and in the end it was Elkie Belcher who posted the fastest time overall to win the Open Female Category in a time of 31:06. Elkie is continually improving her technique and triathlon form in the lead up to the World Triathlon Championships on the Gold Coast in October, and the club wishes her every success in her endeavors.

In second place in the Open Female Category it was Betina Jensen, who in her first ever triathlon also displayed strong cycling and swimming form to register the very respectable time of 44:40.

In the Open Male Category it was young Clancy Long, who is renowned for his strong riding form, who pulled away from the rest of the field to record his maiden Maryborough & District Triathlon Club Reverse Triathlon victory in a time of 31:32. In second place was Geoff MacIlwain who also displayed strong form in all three legs of the event to record the very competitive time of 32:29, and Daryl Stewart, who continues to improve with each event, finished in third place in a time of 33:09.

The Ipsen & Volk Team (Awesome 4some – Take 2) also produced a very strong performance to record a winning time for the Long Course Team Category of 33:14.

In the 50+ Male Long Course Category it was Peter Neville, who continues to maintain his strong form and competitive times, who recorded the winning time of 33:37, which was just outside his own record set at the June 2009 event.

In the U16 Male Short Course Category, there were two new competitors in the sport of triathlon contesting this category, Harrison and Ben Butler. Both boys displayed good form in all aspects of the event with Ben being the eventual winner in a time of 22:41, and his brother Harrison also enjoying the event and posting a great time of 28:05. Both boys have several years of participation left in this category and as such these times were both exceptional.

The U16 Female Short Course Category was also contested by three triathletes who have several years left in this category, with two of them participating in their first ever triathlon. All three triathletes showed triathlon form above their years, and completed the course in great times. In first place was Caitlin Butler in a time of 21:18 (which was only 4sec outside the record she set at the June 2009 event), in second place it was young Tori Chandler in a time of 25:10, and in third place was Lauren Butler in a time of 28:36. The Maryborough & District Triathlon Club looks forward to all three girls enjoying the sport and participating in future club events.

In the Open Male and Female Short Course categories it was John Chandler who made it back to back victories in the male section in a time of 25:13, and newcomer to the sport, Raelene Edwards also enjoyed a top race to record the strong time of 26:00

The Open Team Short Course Category was hotly contested by two new teams to the sport of triathlon as well, with the Evans/Wagstaff/Evans team the eventual winner in a time of 21:00, and the Evans/Ellis/Chandler team in second place in a time of 25:19.

The 50+ Male Short Course Category was won by another newcomer to the sport as well. Barry Parsons in his first ever triathlon as an individual enjoyed all aspects of the reverse triathlon format to post the very respectable time of 22:42.

Race 3 of the Maryborough & District Triathlon Club’s Winter Series will be the Long Course Reverse Triathlon involving a 4km run, 20km cycle, and 400m swim. This event will be held from the Maryborough Sports & Fitness Centre with registration at 9.30am and competition commencing at 10.00am. All current and prospective members are encouraged to come along to participate, marshal, or just spectate and get a feel for the sport of triathlon.

The Maryborough & District Triathlon Club Inc. conducted its first event of the 2009 Winter Triathlon Series, a “Reverse Triathlon”, on Sunday in very pleasant competition conditions with a strong field turning out to contest the event.

The event was conducted from the Maryborough Sports & Fitness Centre, with the “run” being staged on the Jack Pascoe Reserve Athletics Track, the “ride” out and back on the Majorca Road course, and the “swim” in the heated pool facilities.

All athletes started the event together in one wave in the run section, and the early pace was set by “Ipsen Team” who were competing in their very first triathlon. Several of the experienced triathletes were not far behind however so the stage was set for some very exciting competition.

In fact there were some exceptional times set at the event with three records being broken, two of these in the Short Course.

The “Ipsen Team” went on to post the impressive time of 19:57 breaking the previous record of 20:46 set by the “Grose Team” for the Short Course Team category in June 2005.

Young gun triathlete Caitlin Butler also had an exceptional race showing good form in all aspects of the event to post a new course record in the U16 Female Short Course in the time of 21:14. This effort broke the two year course record of 21:53 set by Tiarni Harrison back in May 2007.

The under 16 male short Course was contested by two newcomers to “reverse triathlon” competition, Jack Chandler and Evan Ipsen. Both boys had great first up races, and also produced very strong times as well. Jack Chandler, in his first ever triathlon of any description performed very well in all aspects of the event to post a great time of 25:07. First across the line in this category however was Ivan Ipsen in a time of 19:05, just 44 seconds outside the U16 Male Short Course record set by Jeremy Dellavedova set back in June 2008.

The Open Male Short Course was won by John Chandler in a time of 25:12. John showed great support to his son Jack in his first ever triathlon event, and the “club” looks forward to both triathletes competing again in the July event.

Competition was also very strong in the Long Course category of the event, with yet another record time being posted.

The 50+ Male Long Course record, which was set by Peter Neville in July 2008, was once again broken by Peter in the impressive time of 32:40. Peter had an exceptional race, with his cycling form and swimming improvements enabling him to slash over a minute off his previous record time of 33:56. Such was Peter’s performance he set the fastest time on the day.

Brian “The Fish” Park also performed very well in aspects of the event in the 50+ Male Long Course category, making up considerable time in the pool to post the very competitive time of 36:30 to take out second place.

The Open Male Long Course category was also very hotly contested, with all competitors excelling in the ideal competition conditions. It was however Daryl Stewart who reigned supreme on the day in a time of 33:21 to win. Daryl was followed closely by Adam Lowery in a time of 34:51, then came Barry Smith (35:30), and Shane Dellavedova (37:24).

The Open Female Long Course category was won by Jackie Dellavedova in a time of 42:50. Jackie continues to grow in confidence with each event she competes in, and as such continues to improve her times accordingly.

The next club event will Race 2 of the 2009 MDTC Winter Triathlon Series, and this will be conducted from the Maryborough Sports & Fitness Centre on Sunday 12th July 2009. All current and prospective members are encouraged to come along and participate or just gain some insight into the sport of triathlon.

In what could only be described as idyllic weather conditions, the Maryborough & District Triathlon Club’s March Triathlon was successfully conducted on Sunday. Considering it was a long weekend and many of the club members were away on holidays, the field was both strong and competitive.

In the Open Male Long Course, a battle between Paul Moore, Adam Lowery, and Mike Egan occurred right from the swim leg. Paul was able to gain a slight lead in the ride section of the event, and went on to take line honours in the time of 35:05. Second and third place was not so clear cut right until the end where Adam Lowery was able to record one of his best results for the 2007/08 season and take second place in a time of 36:38. Mike Egan, who is also on the improve, recorded the impressive time of 36:41 to take third place in the event.

Star local triathlete Elkie Belcher maintained her fantastic form in the Open Female Long Course to post a new record time for this category of 35:54. slashing her aunty, Carol Sing’s previous record time by nearly one minute. Elkie has really excelled in triathlon over the last two (2) years and will continue to develop in the coming seasons.

In the U16 Male Long Course another record was broken by “rising star” triathlete, Zac Egan, where he posted a new course record in a time of 37:15. Zac has also shown great improvement over the 2007/08 season.

In the U16 Female Long Course, two future champions of the club provided some very strong competition throughout the event. With less than a minute separating the two at the completion of the event it was Natasha Murphy however who took line honours in the time of 44:58, with Georgia Reid only seconds behind in second position in a time of 45:15.

Not to be outdone, Peter Neville, in the 50+ Male Long Course category also set a new course record in a time of 40:42, breaking his previous course record set earlier in the 2007/08 season. Peter’s swimming has really improved, and this has reaped fantastic benefits for him this season.

In the Open Women’s Short Course it was a three way battle for the top three places in the event, with Debbie Holloway showing great triathlon form after a short time away from the sport to record the winning time of 25:48. Newcomer to the sport of triathlon, Julie Thompson, also performed very well to record a fantastic time of 26:25 to take second position, and Tracey Harrison recorded the strong time of 28:31 to take out third position.

In the U16 Female Short Course it was Caitlin Butler who reigned supreme, posting a very strong time of 27:26 to take first position, with Emily Coutts, in a time of 28:03 also have a great race to finish in second position. Young Liam Murphy, in his first club triathlon at the Maryborough Outdoor Pool, also excelled to take first place in the U16 Male Short Course in a time of 35:07.

The next club event will be the Taltarni Club Ride on Sunday 13th April 2008, and all current and prospective members are welcome to come along and participate, marshal, or just enjoy lunch at the winery. For further details please contact club secretary, Jo Butler, on (03) 54612975.

Triathlon Victoria have advised us that there will be a course alteration for the first Club Triathlon at the National Water Sports Centre (NWSC) on April 6th.

Due to a Blue Green algae bloom they’re moving the swim to the bay side of the river (as it has been for the last two Aquathlons). The movement of the swim location necessitates changing the race to an off-road event with a mountain / hybrid bike ride replacing the on-road bike leg.

This race will be over a multiple lap cross country course. Distances will be 1000m swim (two laps), 18k off-road bike ride (4 laps) and 4k run (two laps).

If you have to beg, borrow, but don’t steal, a mountain / hybrid bike and come along. Bring a buddy for free entry.

With the inaugural Triathlon Victoria Off-Road Championships being held on Sunday 13th April at Anglesea (see calendar on their website for details) this change to an off-road club race would be a great hit-out.
